April Poetry Challenge 2021: Day Fifteen

Day 15 Prompt: (Blank) Story

Form: Clogyrnach

“This is not a love story”

The sun is still hours away.

I am trying to keep at bay,

the memory of

that day you let love,

like suede gloves,

start to fray.

Goodbyes start before you say them.

You can hear it, like a red drum,

during the day, off

beat, a stifled cough,

a standoff,

a hem,

when you expect to hear I love

you. Instead you feel disposed of.

The ring tight against

the knuckle. Looks tense.

Now a sense

of unloved.

Poetic Form 52: Catena Rondo

Twenty-two

Twenty-two years gone by today.

One man, one woman, building a life

through moments of joy and strife.

Twenty-two years gone by today.

One man, one woman, building a life.

Six names born into the world.

Each with their own talents furled.

One man, one woman, building a life.

Six names born into the world.

Late night cries during storms.

Stories told in blankets kept us warm.

Six names born into the world.

Late night cries during storms

of rain and tragedy. Our story

tells of the power of love’s glory.

Late night cries during storms.

Of rain and tragedy. Our story

unfolds with each new day.

Even when we don’t know the way.

Of rain and tragedy; our story.

Twenty-two years gone by today.

One man, one woman, building a life

through moments of joy and strife.

Twenty-two years gone by today.

Poetic Form #52: Catena Rondo

The catena rondo is composed of a variable number of quatrains with a rhyme pattern

of AbbA. The first line of each quatrain is also the final line of the quatrain. Then, the

second line is the first line of the next quatrain The final quatrain repeats the first quatrain

word for word. There are no rules for meter, syllables, or subject matter.

Poetry Challenge Day 20: Isolation

These Days

What will the story be when they write about these days?

We were walking behind screens with everyone
Feeling alone on a crowded subway train
Then came these days
forced into isolation by nature and man
Discovered that we are not enough
These days we are craving the simple
    Handshake
    Hug
    even a Smile

Locked behind doors, ordering
contactless interactions
We took for granted more than tomorrow
Now our wishes are muddled behind masks
    always six feet away

Someday
the shades will open again
a hug will be used to say hello
reservations made for 7:30

But not today

What will your story be when you write about these days?

Poetry Challenge Day 13: Purpose

I Write

I write
to fill the blank page in my heart
    creating the letters
        capitals
        and lowercase
    between the solid blue lines
        just above the dotted line
with just a touch of my own personal style

I write
    to understand what is right
in the midst of all that is wrong
        anger
        and pain
filling the headlines in bold letters
        using a simpler font
I sift through today with a pencil

I write
to worship the power of the word
that creates the reality of now
        joy
        and love
to be discovered in the space
on the paper in front of us
creation is found in the written words

I write
    to bring the past forward
to connect to my children’s future
        history
        and possibility
combine in a single purpose that reveals
why the story of their life
started with me writing between blue lines

Poetry Challenge Day 12: Spirit

When the Spirit

She was speaking in tongues again
Hands raised
Feet stomping
He had seen the show too many times

He was trying to get his bearings again
A new town
A new school
The new kid with the same problems

It wasn’t that he didn’t believe
In the spirit
Or the ghost
He was tired of the tithing plate changing

She won their hearts with her
Past story
Present smile
They told him how proud he should be

He bowed his head at the right time
Said amen
Shook hands
Even fell for a girl three rows over

Six months later, he felt the spirit
Packed bags
Said goodbye
He prayed as her voice faded away

Collection of Very Short Stories

I have started to be more active with the Twitter hashtag #vss365. I don't write for every prompt,  but I've used the opportunity to expand my writing. I thought it would be fun to share some of the stories here. Each day has a different word to be included in the story.

They swore they would be #allies. They were too nervous to actually cut their palms to make it a blood pact, so they used their ice cream cones. 30 Years later. His hands clean, his arms scarred. They shared an ice cream cone in the hospital room. Both teary-eyed. #vss365
"Just a #request..." she said. He walked around the front of the car. He opened the door and reached his hand out. She placed her hand in his. "Anything for you, my love," he said as she stood up. She hit the garage door button as the kids rushed them. #vss365
The buzzer went off, but Kevin knew he had released the ball before the sound, it was traveling a perfect arch, but to the right. Time slowed. His heart sank as the ball faded more to the right... then banked hard off the glass, rim and in! The gym sounded like #pride #vss365

Year: 2103. The #mules were packed. It’s been 4 months. The town was quiet. His children looked at him, uncertainty welling in their eyes. The truth he felt was unspeakable, so instead he said, “We’ll be OK.” #vss365
She stood in the bathtub with her teddy bear #Enchanted. Her feet covered in flour (that made a trail back to the kitchen). The house was so quiet. She could feel the magic. In a bolt she rushed to the window to see if it worked. Nothing. She had school tomorrow. #vss365

To The Woman Painting

It is 12:30 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon
I am sitting at the drive-thru of my locally owned pharmacy
with my five year-old daughter in the back seat
waiting for antibiotics for her strep throat

Your apartment is on the second floor
I see you standing in the window
You are wearing a blue sweater
decorated with what appears to be snowflakes
A brush with white paint in your right hand
You step up on a ladder I can’t see
            to paint above the window
        You are wearing grey pants
You step down
    keeping the brush pointed up
A bare light hangs behind you
I guess your age to be 50ish
Your hair light, short and curled
You move the unseen step ladder to your left
then step up to paint in the corner
I only see your elbow, now

What is your story?
Why are you painting a room on a Thursday afternoon?
Did you cradle children in that arm?
Are you recently divorced?
Maybe a widow?
Or did you move to this town to be close to your grandkids?
    You step down
Walk across my view
only to return a second later
brush held up, fresh paint on its bristles

Your elbow is the last I see of you
As the pharmacist
instructs me on how many doses my daughter can take today
I drive away
I only see the ceiling of your newly painted room
as I turn onto the street
heading home with my sick daughter
        ignorant of your story
but hoping that today’s chapter ends well

To the Old Man Eating Alone on Valentine's Day

You are dressed in a red button down shirt
a sharp red and black tie
Your comb-over doesn’t cover your bald spot
The waitress helps you with your coat and cane
“Thank you,” you say a little loud
as if your hearing is bad
The waitress removes the other three place settings
“Would you like something else to drink?” she asks
“No, water is fine.” You smile at her
She takes your order and soon returns with your hot and spicy soup.

I wonder what your story is…
The restaurant is filled with couples and families
It is Valentine’s day
You watch the others around you as you enjoy your soup
Tipping the bowl to get the last drops out
Then I see it
Left hand, reflecting the light
  a solid gold ring
  but you are alone
What is your story?
Has your wife passed away?
Was this her favorite restaurant?
Is this where you first said I love you?
Or maybe presented her with the companion ring to yours?
Is your home filled with framed memories and carpet that needs replaced?
Are you happy?
Is this day a bittersweet moment?
We make eye contact
I smile, so do you.
Are your eyes filled with memories?
They seem on the verge of tears
You turn away your smile as the waitress brings your lunch
Our waitress brings boxes and the check
You sit with pride
dressed in a red button down shirt
and a red and black tie
A perfect outfit for Valentine’s day
Whatever your story is
she must have made it unforgettable
