Poetic Form 77: Landay

Love your neighbor, they holler as the

blood runs from wounds to the head and heart by prayless hands.

Neighbor needs a new definition,

besides the reflection we use from mirrors on the wall.

Poetic Form #77: Landay
The landay form varies in length but the couplet is the base structure. This means the poem can be two lines or several pages. The form most likely originated in the area of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The couplet consist of 9 syllables in the first line; 13 syllables in the second line. Landay poems tend to reveal harsh truths (love, grief, war) using biting wit.

There is not a specific rhyme pattern for a landay, though the lines tend to end on the sounds of "na" and "ma". This is difficult to replicate in the English language.

Poetry Challenge Day 12: Spirit

When the Spirit

She was speaking in tongues again
Hands raised
Feet stomping
He had seen the show too many times

He was trying to get his bearings again
A new town
A new school
The new kid with the same problems

It wasn’t that he didn’t believe
In the spirit
Or the ghost
He was tired of the tithing plate changing

She won their hearts with her
Past story
Present smile
They told him how proud he should be

He bowed his head at the right time
Said amen
Shook hands
Even fell for a girl three rows over

Six months later, he felt the spirit
Packed bags
Said goodbye
He prayed as her voice faded away

Poetry Challenge Day 10: The (blank) That (blank)

The Word That Can Save The World

God said let there be LIGHT
    And there was LIGHT
An interesting word to start all of this
    Did he know that darkness
would be created, too?

Consider how we plant street lights
Leave TVs on as we sleep
    Candles burn for
        dinner
        romance
        fragrance
        and to pray

You would think that LIGHT was the most
    powerful word in the world
let your light shine
Be a part of
a thousand points of light

But the darkness never seems to fade
It dances on the edge
    of every day
We can not illuminate enough to remove all shadows

LIGHT is not the word that will save the world

LOVE is

LOVE is the word that will save the world

LOVE is...
