PAD 2022 Day 14: Scary

This poem is presented in its rough draft form for the PAD 2022 challenge and will be revised.

PAD Prompt: Scary

Poetic Form: Dansa

“Death has a Favorite Spot”

We all fill a grave.

Darkness under our nails.

Our eyes fading to a pale

marble. Time a cold wave.

We all fill a grave.

Death pauses for a moment.

He knows there is no opponent

that will find me to save.

We all fill a grave.

I watch my world fade out,

to reappear on a seaside lookout.

Death next to me. I stand brave.

We all fill a grave.

Why are we here? I look up.

Death chuckles, I like the buildup

of taking a soul, the shockwave.

We all fill a grave.

My chest cracks, pain is set

in my heart. My eyes fill with regret.

All as Death’s hands wave.

We all fill a grave.

PAD 2022 Day 8: What they never tell you

This poem is presented in its rough draft form for the PAD 2022 challenge and will be revised.

PAD Prompt: What they never tell you

Poetic Form:  Kyrielle

“I was never told”

I once believed in the other

side of the mirror. I discovered

my reflection, a copycat.

I was never told about that.

I recorded songs on cassettes,

for our future roadtrip. Regret

was the rest stop I arrived at.

I was never told about that.

I write words day in and day out,

hoping my name is poet. Doubt

sounds in my ears like a high hat.

I was never told about that.

All the unwritten rules to live

by, when I think I have arrived,

I am served a new caveat.

I was never told about that.

Poetic Form 92: Ottava Rima

 A Better Yesterday

She waits for something more than paper cards.

Written words of affections look so nice

when printed in mass. Love is discarded

with the scraps from dinner. She’ll sacrifice

flowers for a kiss that sets her off guard.

She wants a romance felt more than just twice

a year. She believes in those high school notes,

signed with a heart. Regret tightens her throat.

Poetic Form #92: Ottava Rima

The ottava rima is an Italian from. Lord Byron used this form to write Don Juan

The ottava rima form has 8 lines with an abababcc rhyme pattern. It is commonly

written in iambic pentameter or 10-syllable lines. The form can be a stand alone

poem, or with any number of stanzas.

Poetry Challenge Day 15: Dream

I Dream of Better Days

I dream of better days
When a handshake can seal the deal
When I can eat a wild apple, the peel
Stuck in my teeth, juice on my chin

I dream of better days
When a hug will feel like Christmas
When I can choose to stand last
In a line, not feel like sin

I dream of better days
When the playground slide is free
When the masks fall to see
Smiles from strangers and kin

I dream of better days
When hearts’ desires are pursued
When a day lived is not a feud
Between regret and wanting to begin

I dream of better days...

Poetry Challenge Day 9: Ekphrastic

*The prompt today was to write an ekphrastic poem. Which is a poem inspired by a work of art: a painting, a sculpture, a photograph. Writer's Digest had five photographs we could use as inspiration for our poem. I decided to not have a visual connected to my post today to see if the poem would be enough for you to see the prompt in your mind.

Ekphrastic #5

I feel the darkness of doubt
Heavy on my shoulders
The bars keep the light of life
From my hands

My ambitions left in my pockets
Reduced to a few coins
Some lint and a candy wrapper
But I keep patting them hoping for more

Each day filled with regret
Of not finding a way out of this room
Of course I know that there is a door
I just can't see it (nor do I try)

Instead I watch the birds fly
From this simple square
Cut into the walls
Of a room I built for myself
