April Poetry Challenge 2021: Day Twenty-One

Day 21 Prompt: (Blank) Me

Form: Chant

“Fall to me”

Fall to me when all is lost

Fall to me at all cost

I promise my arms are strong enough

to hold the end of the world’s pieces

Fall to me when the sun rises

Fall to me under starry skies

We will dance for all to see

and maybe they will join us

Fall to me when you are afraid

Fall to me after you have prayed

I will hold your secrets in place

Share in the tears that flow from joy

Fall to me tomorrow

Fall to me to know

That to find the edge of a ring

You have to fall

Fall to me

Poetic Form 81: Haibun

 A Father's Gift

A man, shoulders soft from time, stands next to his child, who is now taller

than him. The man holds a box, a gift, for his son. Wooden, carved with

calligraphy of the past. The box is heavy in the man’s hands. His son lifts it

with ease. They smile; one is bright, the other scarred. In that moment one

can feel time shift in the son’s favor. The man’s chest falls and rises through

earthquakes of memories. The son opens the box to find,

fall leaves ---

crumbling on to

his path

Poetic Form #81: Haibun

The haibun form combines a prose poem with a haiku. The form was popularized by the 17th century Japanese poet Matsuo Basho. The prose poem and the haiku communicate with each other in some way. The prose poem usually sets a scene in an objective manner. The haiku follows the rules for haiku.

Poetic Form 58: Pantoum

Let there be...

At the beginning of the world, when all was dark,

I wish God would have voiced another command,

“Let there be love!” That would have been a better start.

Instead we were given light, seas, and land.

I wish God would have voiced another command.

Say something that would have let us see joy,

instead we were given light, seas, and land.

We walk these hours blind and hurting, smiles only a decoy.

Say something that would have let us see joy,

allow us to fill our counted days with love. Building a life,

we walk these hours blind and hurting, smiles only a decoy.

It’s not only our backs, but our chests hurt from the knives.

Allow us to fill our counted days with love, building a life.

Without that command, the sun and moon watch as we all fall.

It’s not only our backs, but our chests hurt from the knives.

Our ears bleed, hands shake, loneliness hurts above all.

Why couldn’t God speak what we needed most these days?

“Let there be love!” That would have been a better start.

Maybe we could have lived a life clear of such an angry blaze,

at the beginning of the world, when all was dark.

Poetic Form #58: Pantoum

The pantoum form is a set of quatrains (4-line stanzas) that starts with an abab rhyme scheme.

With each quatrain you repeat lines 2 and 4 in the previous stanza as lines 1 and 3 in the next

stanza, creating a new rhyme scheme. Second stanza would be bcbc.

There are two options for the final quatrain.  You can repeat lines 1 and 3 of the original

quatrain as lines 2 and 4 in the final quatrain. Another option is to invert lines 1 and 3 so

that the first line of the poem is also the final line of the poem.

Poetry Challenge Day 3: Follow (blank)

Follow Me Down

Decide now if it is worth it
Of everything we can be
We won’t be the same after this
Now, or forever

Darkness is part of the choice
Over the past, I can only
Wish to forget the scars
Needled into my future

Dedicated to follow me
On the promise that nothing
Weakens our grip during the
Nights we will have to endure

With only a single flame to
Enlighten the corners of doubt

For I need to show you the stars
Are there like vows
Let me lead you down
Like we will live forever

Watch

Watch
As my words
Crumble
Like the glaze on a day-old donut
Stale, yet still just good enough to eat

Watch
As my words
Pile up
Like a 13 car accident on the highway
Horrific, yet glad it is not in your lane

Watch
As my words
Fall
Like the autumn leaves late in October
Beautiful, yet crushed underneath your sole

Watch
As my words
Fade away
Like the tingle of a first kiss
Intense, yet not ready to fully commit

Watch
As my words
Fill in
Like a coffee in the morning cup
Fresh, yet sipped with groggy eyes

Watch
As my words
Become
Like a butterfly in the summer
free, yet already starting to die

Blue Butterfly
