Poetic Form 85: Haiku Sonnet

Shoveling

February storm --

Snow, white and knee-deep calls to

be cleared from the drive.

Sirius watching

daughter and me disturb the

calm of the snow cover.

Sun falls silently --

Shovels grind against concrete

gathering piles.

Snow like sweet sugar

turns to cirrus clouds when I

launch it to the sky.

The constellations join the

street lamp to light our smiles.

Poetic Form #85: Haiku Sonnet

The rules of the haiku sonnet are four 3-liner haiku plus a couplet of

either 5 or 7 syllables adds up to 14 lines, the number of lines found

in a sonnet. For this poem, I used the 5-7-5 syllable structure (more like a Senryu).

Poetry Challenge Day 22: Quirk

*This is a descort poem. No line is the same in the poem.

Fast Car

I find it
quirky
That my eleven year old daughter’s favorite song is
“Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman
Song
About troubles of life
With the promise of living if we could get away by driving fast
Of living with the promise of love
When I ask her
Why she likes the song
She just smiles at me, eyes light up and says that she just does
I understand how music connects to our soul
Maybe it makes her feel that she
“could be someone, be someone, be someone”

Thrid Collection of Very Short Stories

Here is the third collection of very short stories... a couple of these need to be expanded.

"What if we are on the last line of God's #haiku?" she asked. Her mother put down her pen. She had been writing her weekly letter to her own parents. The quarantine was now into the third month. She looked at her daughter, green eyes hoping. "It was a beautiful poem." #vss365

He #organized the love letters into shoeboxes. Each card placed in the envelope with the crease at the top. Placed in the box by date. Funny, there were no letters since 2016. He placed the shoeboxes into a packing box with the divorce papers. He had enough for postage. #vss365

The #Armada Township in Nebraska was busy that day. The Miller Community Center was packed. The parking lot filled with mostly trucks, but a few tractors. The President was on the radio. Only the soft cooing of a child was heard when the world went back to war. #vss365

"Dad, can you dance?" "I can do the #Robot." "What is that?" "Play some music... and watch this!" After a minute he sees that the room is empty, but can hear the laughter from the other room. He continues anyway, awash in memory. #vss365

"May I have a #word with you?" The little boy hung his head walking to the corner of the playground with his teacher. What had he done this time? He felt like everyone wanted a word with him. He resisted the urge to run. "That was an awesome throw!" He smiled for once. #vss365

The lights. The stage. The microphone. The paper filled with words not #spoken. Her hands trembling. Her pain and beauty screaming to be heard. The audience waiting to be knocked over with her voice. She coughs and opens her soul for the world to hear. #vss365

He couldn’t get a #spark from the lighter. Panic set in. He felt around him for some stones, something. It was day 88 of the darkness. He tried to slow his mind. There was a rumble building behind him. He couldn’t tell if it was them or just the world falling apart. #vss365

House to Home

There is a blue hand towel
on the floor below the right corner of the dishwasher
It leaks sometimes
I don't know why
The front door is scuffed with colors
    from the different door decorations
There are socks
in crumbled balls on the living room floor
Crumbs under the table
Toothpaste on the bathroom mirror
This is a house
With a yard that has a few dandelions
           Nicks on the wall
And the roof has been replaced

But this is also a home
Filled with bubble baths
Family dinners
And groans when mom says it is time to clean the rooms
Pictures hang on the wall
capturing moments of joy
The DVD player has the girls’ favorite movie
The radio the boys’ favorite station
The pantry
filled with cereal and Pop-Tarts
three flavors of chips
and boxes of blueberry muffin mix
The hour is late
Time for bed
Stories and goodnights fill
the hallways
As this house rest from being a home

Alone

The following story is from my 12 year-old daughter. She gave me permission to share this story. What do you think?

Alone

The wind sighed as it blew gently, rattling the branches of the leafless trees.  It was in late September, a warm but cloudy Friday in Hastings, Nebraska.  Wrinkled and dull-colored leaves danced as the wind gingerly carried them, and the brown and lifeless grass wavered in the breeze.

But none of this was any significance to a young, six year-old girl, whose name was Emma.  She stared straight ahead as she slowly walked to Heartwell Park,  which had been her favorite since she could remember.  When she arrived at the entrance, she looked to her right. “Come on Lily. Maybe some ducks will be out today.” Then she glanced behind her, ”Keep up Elizabeth! You don’t wanna lose us!”

Then she entered the park, walking past the playground equipment; the merry-go-round, slides, and the monkey bars.  As well as some desolate picnic pavilions.  No one was at the park except the trio, but it was still early in the afternoon. Plus, it was cloudy despite it being warm. But that didn’t bother Emma, actually, it made it better.

“Hmmmm, it looks like the ducks don’t want to visit us today, Lily!” Emma stated as she studied the empty and still water.  She turned her head and saw the swing set.” Hey! I have an idea! Let’s go to the swings! Race you there Lily!”

Emma then ran as fast as she could to the swings. “Ha! I win!” She yelled out triumphantly when she reached a swing, panting slightly.   When Lily didn’t say anything, Emma decided to comfort her. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m sure you will beat me next time.”

Satisfied, she then hopped up onto the swing.”You don’t need to push us Lizzie.” Emma said to her babysitter,” See? I can push myself.” She pushed at the ground as hard as she could to swing.  But to her disappointment, she didn’t get very high. ‘All well,’ She thought,’ I didn’t want to get high anyways.’

She turned her head to face Lily who was on the swing next to her. She opened her mouth and was just about to say something when she heard a ‘meow’ coming from near her feet.  Emma peered down and was surprised and pleased to find a black and white cat sitting next to her swing.  “Oh, hi Henry!”

Henry meowed again in reply.  “Yeah, it is nice out today!” Emma returned.  She swiveled her head to her right.”What Lily? Oh, no, my parents don’t know that I am here.  But we have Lizzie with us! I think we will be alright.”

She chattered to her friend for a bit, occasionally switching every once and awhile to chat with her babysitter or Henry.  They didn’t reply much, but Emma didn’t notice or really care.

After running out of things to say, Emma simply gazed straight ahead, her mind floating off into the clouds, knowing that her friends wouldn’t mind her silence.  Something was nagging the back of her mind, but Emma ignored it, desperate to keep the thought out of her mind.

Hearing a car screech to her left, Emma jerked her head just in time to see a car screech to a stop, but too late.  It slammed into an opossum, and Emma could see without a doubt the opossum was killed.  Emma blinked rapidly, helpless to control her mind as it forced her back into a memory Emma never wanted to think about again.

“Come on Lily!” Emma giggled as she skipped down the sidewalk.  She grinned at the sound of laughter from behind her.

“Wait up Emma!” Lily yelled back as she ran to her best friend.  The two girls laughed when they caught up with each other.  Lily was a young six year girl, with snow blonde hair and blue eyes.

“Wait girls! Let me catch up.” Groaned Elizabeth, their babysitter.  Elizabeth was a sixteen year old, with dirty blonde hair and green eyes. She ran up to them, and the trio all walked in a steady pace.

All the sudden, something black darted in front of them. “Woah!” Lily yelped as she nearly stepped on the thing.

“Oooh, look! It’s Henry!” Emma said excitedly, bending down to pet the cat.  Henry meowed a greeting and rubbed his head against her hand.  Henry was mainly a black cat, but had a white muzzle and chest.  He also had beautiful blue-green eyes.  However, Henry was a stray.  But one day, on the first time the girls met Henry, they petted and fed him a treat.  And ever since then, the cat followed them around.

“Hey Henry!” Lily cooed as she rubbed the cat’s back.  The girls snickered again when they heard the cat purr.

“Huh, he just seems to keep finding us wherever we go, doesn’t he?” Elizabeth observed, also bending down to pet the cat.

“Maybe he’s magic.” Emma whispered to Lily, causing her to giggle.

“Yeah, maybe he is a magic cat.” Lily whispered back.  Once they were done petting Henry, the girls set off again, now joined by their small, black companion.  They were all talking and laughing when Henry suddenly darted onto the road to investigate a dead bird, who looked like it had been ran over.

“Eeewww, Henry! Don’t eat that!’ The girls grimaced in disgust.  Then a car, who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, zoomed down the street.  Henry jerked his head up, but froze.

“HENRY!” Lily screamed and darted out onto the road in hopes of saving the cat.

“No Lily! DON’T!” Elizabeth shouted and and ran after her.

Then came the worst moment of Emma’s life.

“NO!” Emma screamed as the car collided into them. “NOOOO!”

*Thunk*

*Scream*

*Crack*

‘The car didn’t even stop,’ Emma thought distantly,’ It didn’t even stop.’

Emma stared in horror at the corpses now lying on the road, blood pooling around them.  Elizabeth’s legs looked crushed after a tire ran over them.  Emma thought she could see something white around her rib area.  Lily’s head was bent at an awkward angle. Her head had a bloody gash.

‘Get up! Get. Up!’ But they didn’t.  And they never would again.

Emma felt numb, unaware that she was still screaming.   Tears were rushing down her face, soaking her cheeks.  She wanted to run to them, see if they were alive, but her feet were rooted to the ground.  She felt like she couldn’t breathe.

‘This can not be happening! This can NOT be happening!’ Emma screamed in her mind.

“NOOOOOOO!”

Emma gasped sharply, her mind finally allowing her to leave.  Her pants were sharp and short, panic and horror flaring in her chest.  “ No, No.” She choked, tears dripping down her cheeks. “Please no.”

She whirled her head around, desperate to find someone, anyone, there.  But nobody was.  Henry was not by her feet.  Elizabeth was nowhere to be found.  And Lily had disappeared by her side.

    They were gone.

    Dead.

Emma hiccuped and wiped her cheeks, unsuccessfully trying to clear away her tears.  She looked up at the sky.  ‘Why? Why did they leave?’

Emma slid off the swing and stood still for several minutes, staring at the ground, watching as tears fell from her chin.  She sniffed before shuffling her feet forward, slowly making her way back to the entrance of the park.

    Alone.

Behind her, the swing that she had previously sat on, was still gently swinging.  After a couple of moments, the swing next to it also began to sway.

    Back and forth.

    Back and forth.

    Slowly getting higher.

As if someone was sitting on it and someone else was pushing it.

As My Daughters Sleep

4:48 in the morning
My day begins
Coffee is brewed
I try to stay quiet
Everyone else is still at rest

5:25 in the morning
Time to get ready
For work
Teeth brushed
Shoes match my belt

5:55 in the morning
Computer packed
Coffee mug filled
And I head for the door

Two of my daughters share the room
Next to the entry way
Their new string of lights glow
Soft and pink in the morning light
They lay sprawled out like dolls
Blankets twisted between legs and arms
They are Peace personified
My heart jumps
As I consider the world I will open the door to

I fight the urge to lock them away
To stand in front of them
As the world shoots arrows of discourse
Aiming for their hearts and minds
Aimed to destroy

6:00 in the morning
I make my feet move
To enter a world meant to destroy
But I have the strength to go
Because my daughters will be awake
With smiles and hugs
When I come home

She Believes in Me

She believes in me
That I can name the stars
Keep the moon in orbit
And heal all of her scars

She asks the questions
I supply the answers
Or at least come up with
Ideas that satisfy her

She cries when I drop
A harsh word in her ear
Wonders what she has done
For me to create this fear

But she will grab my hand
As her feet traverse the stairs
Jumping off the last
Taking a personal dare

She can see deeper than
Those moments when I fail
She believes in me
And that pierces me like a nail

6 a.m. Flight

I’m traveling from Grand Island to Madison
Off the Wing
 by way of Dallas
A clear sky
the horizon wrapped in a rose colored ribbon
I can see the fields crisscrossed with roads
The land spotted with ponds and streams
Streetlights visible from small towns
like spilled salt on a dark table cloth

By now my family is starting their morning routine
As are so many other families below our plane

I can see the day unfold
 beautiful from 20000 ft

But I start to wonder about the things I can’t see
I can’t see the hungry child looking for something
to eat in the bare cupboards

I can’t see the dad sipping coffee as he makes
his daughter’s lunch, she doesn’t like the school’s chicken

I can’t hear the teenage son yell at his mom
knowing it hurts her but he is so angry lately

I can’t hear the dedicated teacher order her coffee
the excitement of a new lesson spurring her to school early

I can’t experience the thousands of stories unfolding beneath me
as the curve of the sun rises from the horizon
  Slow and steady
Making me squint to watch the darkness fade away on this new day

I smile as I text my family to have a wonderful day
For a second I understand the cliche
that this life is a gift
and through the joy and the pain
it is my day to live

Then my phone vibrates
 “U 2 Dad”

Sunday Morning

My 22 month old daughter gets restless in church
We walk out to the entryway
The hymns still audible
Though the father's voice is now muffled
The outer doors are glass
The sun of Sunday morning warm on our skin
She expresses joy as birds fly and land
On the church lawn
Carefree they search for food
As my daughter laughs and points
"Burds," she tells me
She looks at me to make sure I see
"Birds," I repeat back
She tries to follow one with her finger
as it takes flight
She turns to me again
Smiling she says, "burds"
But I hear the word joy
