PAD 2022 Day 24: Hero Villain

This poem is presented in its rough draft form for the PAD 2022 challenge and will be revised.

PAD Prompt: Hero / Villain

Poetic Form:  Cadralore

"Life in a Moment"

1. He doesn’t understand why he hates

the boy. He knows it’s wrong, yet

his hands burn with a fire flamed

by everyone at school who feeds his ego

that is physically beat down when he gets home

2. He stands in the April snow, decades from their

last kiss. Broken from the loss of his life,

he has wandered to her door, unsure of what

happens next. He knocks and knocks. She

can’t answer because she has a new name.

3. She hears his voice, like a cyclone circling

across the coast line ruining a family

vacation. A game she learned on the driveway

with his love, that now storms through

her skills to win a medal and his approval.

4. She rages against a love that she never felt before.

The burning from the glass releases the gates

of remorse. Another two count goes down

in one motion. She lets the bar hold her up

as she dances to a song she doesn’t like.

5. Every choice we have now is because of the

choices we made. We follow our hearts one time,

then choose what our minds think the next.

Our fantasies mix with reality until we don’t know

if we are the villain or the hero of the moment.

April Poetry Challenge 2021: Day Five

Day 5 Prompt: The First (Blank)

Form: Free Verse

The First Time I Saw a Spirit

It was past my bedtime

I was six years old

My father

sitting at the table

Illuminated by the light above

His shoulders sloped down

He did not know I was there

I walked to his left

that is when I saw my first spirit

A demon, a wisp, floating

above the ice cubes bobbing

 in caramel colored liquid

My father sipped the spirit

down with the liquid

As the glass hit the table a different

spirit would materialize

I must have let out a breath

because my father turned toward me

But it was the spirit speaking

his words dragged out of his mouth

slow and trembly

“What are you doing up?”

His hand heavy on my head

I stepped back,

afraid of the spirit

swimming in his eyes

“Had to use the bathroom”

My father smiled

I did not recognize it

There were too many teeth

He sipped the second spirit

a third appeared

I stumble

as the wisp, the demon,

smiled

at me

   like my father

“Goodnight” I said

And hear a grumble from the figure

At the table

As he sipped again

 and again

 and again.

I did not sleep well for years

Until I finally gave into the spirits

beckoning

But I have no son to bother me

It is just me

Ice

Caramel liquid

And a little spirit floating above my glass.

Poetic Form 90: Rondeau

 Snow-blind

Knuckles white, he is driving south on snow

covered roads he hopes brings him home. Light low

causes him to be snow-blind. Center line

lost, the shoulder fades into fields. The signs

covered in ice as the north wind still blows.

Knowing traveling is risky, he slows

the wheels as headlights appear. “Don’t let go,”

he whispers. A truck’s light fills the skyline,

knuckles white.

The rush like spirits burning. His elbows

bent to pour and drink for the afterglow.

The truck’s trailer, so white, makes him snow-blind.

The sound of rumbling, wheels find the decline,

and up is now down, shot glass overflowed,

knuckles white.

Poetic Form #90: Rondeau

The rondeau form is composed of 15 lines in three stanzas with the

first word or phrase from the first line as the refrain (R). All the lines

are 8 or 10 syllables, except the refrain. The rhyme scheme is two
