PAD 2022 Day 29: The Last BLANK

This poem is presented in its rough draft form for the PAD 2022 challenge and will be revised.

PAD Prompt: The Last BLANK

Poetic Form: 7 Syllable Lines

“The Last Goodbye”

The sun dances with the edge

of the world. They pause at a

rusted gate, wondering if

there is enough time left to

appreciate the garden

beyond. He pushes the gate

open, feeling as time gives

away in a screech. A stone

path weaves through flora, wildly

and beautiful. Rose bushes

six feet tall. Yellow bursts from

giant sunflowers. A fox

darts across their path. Its red

swallowed by the darkening

green shrubbery. A granite

fountain, empty and stained by

passing days, is dressed in thick

ivy. Blue wild indigo

stand guard with daylilies like

a wedding party waiting

for the ceremony to

begin. They walk hand in

hand, feeling the colorful

chaos eclipse them in sight

and fragrances - for now they

are happy. Shadows start to

fill the spaces between the

leaves. He spots a small patch of

Forget-Me-Not. Letting go

of her, he kneels to pick a

bouquet. He inhales the scent,

a hint of rain reflects the

goodbye he is forming for

her heart. He turns as he stands

placing the small blue flowers

in her hand. Kisses her cheek,

like a breeze. “Forget-Me-Nots,”

she says as she lifts them to

take in the moment. But the

hint of rain pierces her heart.

She looks up to find him gone,

like all the colors of the

garden around her, fading

into the darkness of night.

Poetic Form 35: Echo Verse

Hello

I wonder if you’ll go?
 lo
and behold the stage is set.
Bet
I will, that you will not wait.
Fate
follows its own rules of time.
I’m
afraid that we will always be
free
from the binds set when we say hello.
No,
you were silent entering the door,
or
capturing my glance in a crowd.
Clouds
filled my eyes as soon as you held,
felled
my future with a kiss of goodbye
bye.

Poetic Form #35: Echo Verse
Echo verse has a one rule: Repeat the end syllable(s) of each line.

Fade

As I walk away
With goodbyes still echoing in my ears
I smile with a frown
Knowing that each passing minute
hour
day
month
and year
As others hear the same goodbyes
my name will fade into stories of “Remember when…”
Then to “What was his name…”

Because we all fade away
We all

fade

away...

Didn't Know Forever Looked Like This

I believed in your whispers
And words spoken in quiet moments under moonlight
I believed in your notes and cards
Left on pillows and steering wheels
Forever looked different then
Forever was our fingers intertwined
Your head on my shoulder

Forever was a given
Never questioned
Always believed

But now
Forever looks like crumbling clocks
Rings that have broken to have a beginning and end
Frowns
Turned downed eyes
And unanswered messages

Whatever happen to kisses that stopped time
To holding each other until the sun broke through the blinds

I didn’t know forever looked like
Silent dinners
Stay late at work
Infomercials at 2 a.m.

I didn’t know that forever could look like goodbye
